Studying God’s Word

Women of the Word – Great book by Jen Wilkin on (as the subtitle suggests) how to study the Bible with your mind and your heart.

Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods – Comprehensive book on different methods of study.  You’ll walk away with so many ways/ideas to study passages of Scripture and the excitement to do so.

How to Study the Bible by John MacArthur– A very manageable book on the power of the Word, who can study the Bible and how to study the Bible.

Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary – I have an older version, but it is something I come back to over and over again and love all that it has to share.

Seek Him Daily – This is a Bible study journal that lets you select the passage and prompts you to go deeper using Jen’s GROWTH method.  It also includes space for prayer.  Great value!

My friend, Melissa, creates the best worksheets using the inductive method of study (OIA).  I have many of her workbooks, but she also has PDF’s available in her Etsy shop.

Growing as a Christian

Whispers of HopeI LOVED this book with its impactful devotional thoughts and guided journal for prayer.  Plus it has old-looking edged pages (which is just plain fun).  Makes a wonderful gift!

Seek Him First – With relevant Scriptures, real life stories and heart to heart talk, Jen shares what it means to seek God first in your life.  This book will motivate you to jump in and get started (or dig even deeper).

Bibles & Devotionals for Kids

Some of my favorite memories snuggled up before bed or during breakfast devotions have been with the following books.

The Rhyme Bible – While there have been different versions of this particular rhyme Bible over the years, I loved using this book as a great way to not only introduce my children to the Scriptures but also build future literacy skills through rhyme.

The Jesus Storybook Bible – Oh my heart!  This Bible storybook is precious and you will love seeing how Jesus is weaved through every Bible story shared . . . that is if you make it through the introduction without tearing up.  Suggested ages 4-7, and read it over and over again.

The Gospel Story Bible – The perfect follow-up book to The Jesus Storybook Bible is this – the Gospel Story Bible.  Your kids will develop a great understanding of the Gospel and our need for a Savior.  We also liked answering questions at the of each story.

Indescribable – A great devotional to stir an awe for God and an amazement for what He has created.  Very manageable and relatable!

Unseen – My son read through this devotional when he was 11/12 years old.  He really enjoyed it and even gave a copy to a friend. Everything Priscilla Shirer puts out is good!

Boyhood & Beyond – A wonderful book for your son.  My husband and son have read through it twice over the years.  Great life lessons!

Digital Bible Study Kit for Tweens – Want to get your kids started on the inductive method of Bible study?  Melissa has great resources and she explains how to do it!

More for Kids

The Prince Warriors is a fictional series of 4 books by Priscilla Shirer.  My son read these when he was 10-11 and really enjoyed them!  Good stories and spiritual undertones.

Busy Books – This is a helpful book for your kids (8-12yo) to take to church and fill out as the listen to the sermon.  The pages are duplicated for each Sunday, providing space for them to write down what the sermon was about, who they will pray for, listen for particular words, and more.

I have loved the Chronicles of Narnia since I was a child.  We have read it as a family, listened to audio books and loved it all, especially the symbollism of the Christian faith.

Parenting

Parenting with Love & Logic – I read this book back when my first child was a toddler and I was feeling the exhaustion of trying to teach obedience to a strong-willed kid.  After reading and implementing the strategies, I remember feeling much better equipped and that the stress of parenting a toddler was so much less.

Gist – This is a book I could read over and over again and walk away with more each time.  Gist is a must-read for parents of all kids from late elementary through high school and gives you the perspective of what needs to be done to prepare your kids for life.  The book is full of applicable examples and illustrations.

Christ Centered Parenting – My church ran this study and it was so good!  The videos are panel-style discussions.  But my favorite parts of the study were the excellent articles found in the book covering relevant topics for today’s parents as well as the discussion among parents each week.

Women’s Ministry

Growing Together – This is the book we use in our Women’s Mentoring Ministry at church.  The pair of women work through it together and talk about the discussion questions at the end of each chapter.  It is a great spring board to learn, grow, and share with each other.

Spiritual Mothering is for women who want grow in discipling others or help them lead a discipleship group.  Rich content and thought-provoking.
